Australian envoy to visit the NMI
Australia’s ambassador to Micronesian island governments will visit the Commonwealth in the middle of this month, the administration reported yesterday.
Press secretary Charles Reyes Jr. said Ambassador Corinne Denise Tomkinson was scheduled to meet with local government officials and media members during the visit, but he did not provide specific details.
Tomkinson is a career officer with Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. She is currently Australia’s consul general to the CNMI and Guam.
She will be making her first official trip to the Commonwealth.
“We welcome this visit and we are delighted that an Australian ambassador will be making her first official visit to our Commonwealth. We will try to make her visit a very pleasant and enjoyable one. We welcome Australian visitors and we would like to encourage more Australians to visit the CNMI,” Reyes said.
Tomkinson also serves as her country’s ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
According to information provided by the Governor’s Office, Tomkinson was director of Intelligence Policy and Liaison Section in the Australia’s Foreign Affairs Department Before her appointment to Micronesia. She has also held positions as a director in the Pacific Islands, North East Asia, Images of Australia and APEC Branches.
She has extensive experience in United Nations issues, including economic, social, environmental and human rights issues.
Tomkinson has served in Australian Diplomatic Missions in Pretoria (1995-96); New York (1990-95); Port Moresby (1985-87) and Madrid (1977-80). In 2002 she served as Chief Negotiator in the Bouganville Peace Monitoring Group in Papua New Guinea.
Born in 1952, Tomkinson holds a Bachelor of Economics degree with honors from the Australian National University and a Master of Arts degree in Strategic Studies from Deakin University.
She is a fellow of the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies at the Australian Defence College, and has been a United Nations Disarmament Fellow.
