Acting Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez yesterday declared June as Small Business Development Month in the Commonwealth and endorsed government programs that promote entrepreneurship.

Villagomez, in signing the proclamation, encouraged local residents to participate in small business workshops and take advantage of services offered by the Commonwealth Development Authority and the Small Business Development Center at Northern Marianas College.

SBDC provides education and training on small business operations and management, while CDA offers start-up capital and expansion financing.

“Together, these two government agencies have helped many local small businesses over the years, and they continue to provide technical assistance and access to capital,” Villagomez said.

The acting governor also highlighted the importance of entrepreneurship under the current economic condition.

“In this time of economic contraction, our local residents must understand the urgent need to rely less and less on CNMI government employment and more on private sector opportunities. Private sector entrepreneurship is vital to the health of our economy and absolutely essential to our government,” he said.

CDA and NMC will sponsor a series of business workshops during the 9th Annual Small Business Month.

Ken Shankweiler will speak on the “Essential Skills of Leadership” on Monday, June 5. He will also lead a workshop on “Delegating” on Wednesday, June 7.

Rik Villegas will conduct a workshop on “Resolving Conflicts” on Tuesday, June 27. He will discuss “Managing Complaints” in another workshop on Wednesday, June 28.

All workshops will be held from 9am to 12nn at the college’s SBDC conference room. Registration time for workshops is 8:30am to 9am.
