Gomez exorcises the Ghost
Erwin Gomez dethroned the past two weeks’ champion Roger Espiritu to win the interim 9-ball tournament Wednesday night at Shooters Sports Bar & Grill.
Gomez beat all comers in the elimination phase and joined expert hands Ed Manucdoc, Kim Coats, and two-time defending champion Espiritu in the semifinals.
Coats was the first to barge into the finals after she outplayed Manucdoc in their Final Four matchup.
Gomez then had his hands full against Espiritu, but got a break with a rare letdown from the player known in local pool circles as the “Ghost” to advance to the title match against Coats.
Coats and Gomez were engaged in a dogfight early on but the former eventually took hold of the match to win the weekly pool tournament with the latter taking runner-up honors.
In related news, Budweiser-Budlight Billiard League organizer Fred Prinz said teams continued to pick and shuffle players Wednesday night for the upcoming 8-ball competition.
He said right now there are 10 teams already signed up, but there are still people on two additional teams waiting for other members to come back from vacation.
As a result, Prinz has scheduled a team captains meeting for next Wednesday, June 7, 8pm to try and finalize all the team rosters.
The Budweiser-Budlight Billiard League is organized and operated by the CNMI Billiard and Dart Association with direct help and services provided by Budweiser-Budlight, MARPAC, AMPAC, Ltd., and Shooters Sports Bar & Grill.
The CNMI Billiard and Dart Association, which was chartered more than three years ago, is a non-profit organization set up and run for the billiard and dart players of the CNMI. If you are interested in becoming a member, call Prinz at 235-3733 after 5pm.
Shooters Sports Bar & Grill also hosts a blind draw dart tournament every Saturday night starting at 8pm. Entry fee is $5 and games are only $0.50 per player. (Mark Rabago)
