Saipan to host 25th APIL meeting

Lawmakers from 12 island governments in the Pacific will gather on Saipan next week for the 25th General Assembly of the Association of Pacific Island Legislatures.
The CNMI Legislature will host the assembly from June 5-7, 2006. The theme of the meeting is “Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources for the Pacific Islands.”
APIL is composed of legislative representatives from the Northern Marianas, American Samoa, Guam, Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, Yap, the Marshall Islands, Palau, Hawaii, Nauru, and Kiribati.
Reps. Martin B. Ada and Absalon V. Waki Jr. are the CNMI representatives appointed to APIL.
Three speakers have been invited to talk about alternative and renewable energy. Terry Surles, director of the Pacific International Center for High Technology Research, will discuss sustainable energy systems and appropriate renewable energy technologies. Hawaii Sen. J. Kalani English, chairman of the Hawaii State Legislature’s Energy, Environment, and International Affairs Committee will talk about Hawaii’s effort in achieving energy independence. Casey Conner of Conner Incorporated will tackle how islands can strategically plan an alternative energy future.
Each APIL is expected to come up with resolutions related to the topic.
The organization will also elect a new set of officers during the assembly.
Other activities include a friendship softball game at the Susupe softball field, a tour of a Saipan garment factory, and a beach cleanup from Sugar Dock to the Chalan Kanoa Beach Club.
