It would be considered a solid win against any other team, but the Budweiser Kings were somewhat less than royal in the their 12-7 win over the K’s Wao Pow Masters on Sunday, as they failed to shake the seniors during the Budweiser Saipan Major League action at Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.

The first place Kings enlisted the aid of three pitchers on the mound, and aside from second baseman Dane Lizama, none of their hitters had a standout performance against veteran hurler Ben Dueñas.

Lizama went 5-for-6 with a string of singles and three runs batted in for the Kings to account for nearly a third of his team’s hits, but Jerome Delos Santos went 2-for-5 with a single and a triple, and the speedy centerfielder stole three bags to boot.

Rookie A.J. Allen went 2-for-6 at the plate for the Kings and managed a single, a double, and an RBI, but the production went down from there.

It’s hard to fault the Kings as they scored in all but one inning, but they were capable of much more against the Masters. The pennant frontrunners scored a pair to start the game, notched a tally in each of the next three innings, and posted a pair in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings before Lizama singled in Delos Santos for the final run.

The Masters needed a little time to start the rally. After trailing 4-3 through three, the Wao Pow wonders waited until the final two innings to reel in the Kings with a a pair in the eighth and ninth, but their miscues ultimately cost them the game.

Dueñas went the distance for the Masters allowing a dozen runs off of 17 hits and striking out a pair, but his teammates committed seven errors that could have made a difference in the game.
