Commonwealth officials have until today to file their financial disclosure statements without facing penalties.

The initial deadline ended May 1, but the Office of the Public Auditor allowed late filers a 30-day extension. However, those who fail to meet today’s final deadline will be assessed a fine of $10 for each day the delinquency continues.

OPA personnel visited Rota yesterday to assist officials there in filing their financial disclosure statements. Today, OPA staff will be at the Tinian Mayor’s Office to accept filings.

Officials are required to submit financial disclosure statements to demonstrate any possible conflict of interest in the performance of their official duties.

Those required to file such an annual statement are appointed and elected officials and judicial officers, including members of board, task forces, and other CNMI offices.

Government employees who receive additional compensation for rendering services or who serve as an independent contractor for the Commonwealth government are also required to disclose their financial interests.

Stiff fines or imprisonment may be imposed on any official who refuses to file a financial disclosure report or provides false or misleading information.
