Senate Bill 15-44, authored by Senate Vice President Pete P. Reyes, is now awaiting action by the governor.

If enacted, the measure would require the Legislative Bureau to make public records available for inspection or copying within 10 days of request.

“The people, in delegating authority, do not give their public servants the right to decide what is good for the people to know and what is not good for them to know. The Legislative Bureau exists to aid the legislature in the conduct of the people’s business,” states a portion of the bill.

“It is the intent of this act that the public records of the Legislative Bureau be subject to Open Government Act. The people insist on remaining informed so that they may retain control over the instruments they have created,” it adds.

The Open Government Act imposes a $50 fine on any public officer who violates this law. A government employee who deliberately refuses to make public records available may be fined up to $1,000 and or imprisoned for up to one year.
