With less a month remaining before some of the top runners from the CNMI, Guam, Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, Palau, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Kiribati, and Yap lace up their sneakers and vie for the gold in the 6th Micronesian Games, organizers are planning another event aimed at preparing the hometown for its hosting duties with this weekend’s 5km Fun Run, Walk, and Crawl.

Two months ago the Micronesian Games Organizing Committee offered the first fundraising run for the Games at the American Memorial Park, and this time they are calling for all of the local athletes who will be representing the CNMI to participate in the off-road 5-kilometer Fun Run that will take participants down the fairways of the Laolao Bay Golf Resort tomorrow, May 27.

The cost to forego the golf cart for a run along some of the most beautiful stretches of grass is a mere $10, and proceeds will also go directly to the MGOC’s efforts to host the best event possible on Saipan.

The last time the MGOC held a 5km Fun Run, Walk, and Crawl, a total of 77 people turned out to show their stuff at the Garapan park as members of the CNMI Men’s National Basketball Team, triathletes, swimmers, track and field stars, and supporters turned out for the event.

Veteran triathlete Ronald Villafria took top honors by crossing the finish line just 19:25 after the start, while Saipan’s Queen of Distance was the first female to finish the fun when speedy teenager Bo Wang checked in at 20:54.

Now the MGOC wants to see the local athletes help support their own cause by turning out to this weekend’s event. Registration for the run starts bright and early at 7am and the race gets underway at 7:30am.

For those who enjoy spending a few hours on the course riding on a cart, the MGOC is hosting a fund raising tournament later that day at 10am. Registration for the day on the links is $100 and gets started at 9am with tee times an hour later.

Saturday also marks the first day that official Micronesian Games merchandise will be available for sale as polo shirts will be selling for $20 and youth T-shirts for $10.
