Mt. Carmel wins Attorney General’s Cup
For the fifth year in a row, Mt. Carmel High School has won the Attorney General’s Cup Speech Competition.
This year’s competition was held on May 5, 2006. This year, the competition was held for the first time on the island of Rota, and featured competitors from seven Commonwealth high schools. Competitors delivered speeches on their visions of the Commonwealth’s immigration policy, answering questions about who is foreign and who is local, whether the Commonwealth should go beyond its minimum obligations in offering protection to refugees, and what duties are owed to immigrants in the Commonwealth.
James Ryan Benavente from Mt. Carmel High School took first place in the competition with a speech that argued for expanded refugee protection in the Commonwealth. Nicole Torres from Grace Christian Academy took second place. Keala Mikala Boyer Peters from Kagman High School took third place.
The Attorney General’s Cup Speech Competition provides high school students with the opportunity to research a topical legal issues, form positions about the issue, and present arguments for their positions to an esteemed panel of judges drawn from the community. Each Commonwealth high school may select one student to compete. This was the 23rd year of the Attorney General’s Cup Speech Competition.
Benavente will have his name engraved on a plaque mounted on the base of the large, gold-colored cup itself, which will be displayed at Mt. Carmel High School for the coming year. (PR)
