Swimmers line up to Escape
A crowd of detainees destined to break free from the smallest island in the Marianas can finally pick up their get-out-of-jail free cards as the organizers of next month’s 4th Annual Escape From Managaha released a treasure trove of details.
Thanks to the Saipan Swim Club, Coca-Cola, Marianas Visitors Authority, The Sports Show with Brad and Shan, NMDOA, the Department of Public Safety, Pacific Development, Inc., and Tasi Tours, swimmers will be able to cross shipping lanes from Managaha Island in search of Micro Beach on June 3, and now the official applications are available at a number of locations, to include the MVA and the Saipan Tribune.
Before any of the swimmers make plans to don their sleek suits and strap on their goggles and caps, they must possess the ability to finish a mile-long swim in 40 minutes or less. Unlike past years, swimmers are not limited in their use of additional equipment as organizers are allowing all participants to wear fins, wet suits, pull buoys, and more.
Race day registration will begin at the crack of dawn at the Smiley Cove Marina between 5:45am and 7am, and all participants will receive a pre-race briefing on the Managaha shores at 7:30am.
The fee to participate in the event is only $20, and this time around all of the proceeds will go directly into the coffers of the Saipan Swim Club.
In exchange for their funds, swimmers will receive one heck of an inter-island trip, a T-shirt, and a post-swim barbecue when they reach Micro Beach. There is even an opportunity for non-swimmers to have fun atop kayaks and as partygoers as the SSC will need volunteers to paddle along to ensure the safety of the escapees. Those wishing to challenge the chicken at the barbeque can sample the food and fun for a donation of $10.
Flor Jones recently became the highest bidder looking to ride the two-seat kayak that SSC head coach Michael Stewart plans to pull when he swims across the channel, as she raised the high water mark to $50.
