2 men hijack car in attempted robbery
A man managed to run away from two men who allegedly boarded his car and tried to rob him at knifepoint in San Roque, the Saipan Tribune learned yesterday.
Police said they were able to recover the victim’s car during pursuit in the Garapan area. The two suspects, described as locals, disappeared into the bushes near the Old Japanese Hospital.
Saipan Tribune gathered that the victim, a Chinese, parked his car next to a store by the Labor and Immigration building in San Antonio Thursday at 1:30am to pick up a friend.
One suspect opened the front passenger door, sat inside and pointed a knife at the victim’s right arm. The second suspect opened the rear passenger door and sat in the rear seat.
The first suspect forced the victim to drive north along Beach Road then to San Roque.
The suspects instructed the victim to park in the dark parking area of La Fiesta Mall. The suspect in the rear seat then chocked the victim while the other suspect pushed the knife against his right side and asked for money.
The victim told them he had no money and managed to get out from the car and ran away.
The suspects drove away with the car. The victim called a friend through a cell phone to pick him up. The victim contacted the police when they reached 99 Cents in Garapan.
Later, a patrol officer spotted the car near the Godfather’s Bar in Garapan and followed it. The car sped toward the Navy Hill traffic light and headed south on Middle Road, with the police in pursuit.
When it reached the area across the Old Japanese Hospital, the driver of the vehicle suddenly slammed on the brakes. The pursuing police vehicle also stopped but the car suddenly backed up, hitting the patrol vehicle. The suspects then fled through the bushes and tangan-tangan area.
Police searched the place, but did not find the suspects. Two pairs of zoris belonging to the suspects were recovered from the car.
