Five matches kick off DFS tennis tomorrow
All is set for the start of the 25th Annual DFS Micronesian Tennis Championships as organizers have already set the schedule of matches for the first weekend of play.
According to the schedule provided by tournament director and Northern Mariana Islands Tennis Association president Eli Buenaventura, five matches will be played tomorrow to kick off the tournament at Pacific Islands Club tennis courts.
Three matches are scheduled to begin at 5:30pm with Johnny Johnson taking on Keith Gabaldon for a ticket to the semifinals in the boys’ 18-and-under singles.
While the two are duking it out, Didith Julve and Jorge Olanda will face Tony Santos and Ganover Rettin in the men’s 4.0 doubles also for a slot in the semis.
Action in the round-robin mixed 3.0 doubles will also get underway as Karen Buettner and Dr. Gary Ramset take on Debbie Bilston and Jerry John.
Micronesian Games hopeful Nicolas Son will also see action on the hard court as he faces Ho Suk Chang in the boys’ 18-and-under singles quarterfinals, while Sang Woo Han challenges Christian Miller in the boys’ 13-and-under singles. Both bouts are scheduled to get underway at 7pm.
Action resumes on Saturday and will continue on Sunday. After a brief break, netters will return for the second weekend of action from May 26 to May 29.
As reported earlier, about 41 netters have signed up to compete in singles, while 19 doubles teams have also registered.
Familiar names in the junior netters’ corner will be featured in the tournament such as Lila Mailman, Vivian Lee, Audrey Motto, Mayuko Arriola, Thea Minor, Melody Johnson, Ilia Corella, Sabrina Bilston-John, Gabrielle Race, Ji Hoon Heo, Ralph Buenaventura, Benjie Decena, Joe Motto Jr., Rafael Jones, Angelo Jones, Aaron Lee, and Michael Grandinett among the many others.
