Dirk Digglers drop ball at PIC
First place teams Lite U Up and the Ying Yang Clan preserved their unblemished 3-0 records without setting foot on the courts on Tuesday night, but their competitors gained ground at the Pacific Islands Club in continuation of the 7th Annual Spring Co-ed Four’s Beach Volleyball League.
While the undefeateds sat idly by, the next four teams in the standings scored quality wins on the San Antonio sand to make for an interesting chase for the championship, but there is still plenty of season remaining.
Just Put It In (3-1) climbed into third place in the standings by hitting all of their shots in a three-set sweep over Last Call (0-4), but Amanda Puleo’s Clubmate clan performed admirably against one of the league’s elite teams.
Ike Diopolus’ Just Put It In bunch posted back-to-back-to-back 11-8 wins and became the highest scoring team with 120 points in four games, while bestowing a similar title upon Last Call on the other end of the spectrum with 154 points against.
Just Put It In returns to the courts next Tuesday, May 23, to face Victoria’s Secret at 7:30pm, while Last Call has a week to lick their wound before they face the Ying Yang Clan on Thursday, May 25, at 5:30pm.
Chafed Grundle 2, Dirk Digglers 1
A week after dropping their first game of the season and without their captain present to cheer them on, Chafed Grundle rose to the occasion to quickly dispatch the Dirk Digglers with a pair of one-sided sets to earn their second win.
There was no apparent hangover from their narrow loss to the Just Put It In in last week’s thriller as Chafed Grundle scored consecutive 11-4 wins in the opening two sets to clinch the “W” on Tuesday night.
Warwick “Not So” Lowe was head and shoulders above the competition as the Grundle took the driver’s seat in the three-way tie for fourth place with Sand In My Pants and Victoria’s Secret.
All three teams have allowed 74 points against, but the Grundle have scored the most points (87) to give them the inside track on the race for the top. They could have added to the total but the Chafed chaps lost the final set 11-5.
The Dirk Digglers resume their quest for a winning record tonight when they face Sand In My Pants at 7:30, while Chafed Grundle looks to discover Victoria’s Secret at 8:30pm.
Sand In My Pants 2, MHS Dolphin Divers 1
Veteran volleyballer Jon Cramer’s influence on the Sand In My Pants clan is paying dividends as team captain Sandra Arnold and company are enjoying a strong start to the season.
Their success continued on Tuesday with a big win over the MHS Dolphin Divers that went down to the wire and required the voice of experience to get the Pants through the wash.
After falling behind in the set count 1-0 in the opener, Arnold’s squad shook out the wrinkles to even the match with an 11-5 recovery in the second before sealing the deal with an 11-7 win in the third.
The students played well but were unable to maintain the momentum from the opening set. They have another shot at earning their second win of the season tonight against their classmates from the Splashers at 5:30pm, while Sand In My Pants duels with the Dirk Digglers at 7:30pm.
Victoria’s Secret 2, MHS Dolphin Splashers 1
Stephanie Arnold’s squad also enjoyed the fruits of its victory on Tuesday as Victoria’s Secret sank the MHS Dolphin Splashers by outscoring the students 22-12 in the first two sets.
It mattered not that the Splashers boast the biggest lineup in the league as the Secret spikers eked out a hotly contested 11-9 win in the opener and cruised to an 11-3 victory in the second set to cinch the game.
Despite chalking up a tally in the wrong side of the win-loss column for the fourth time in as many games, the Splashers battled to secure the third set with an inspirational two-point win that required all the energy they could muster, 11-9.
Victoria’s Secret will address its case of Chafed Grundle tonight at 8:30, while the Splashers look for a piece of the Divers in tonight’s opener at 5:30pm.
