Athletics, women’s soccer, paddlers are week’s brightest
It was a heck of a week for athletics, women’s soccer, and paddling as athletes from all three sports dominated the headlines.
Northern Marianas Athletics held its 2006 McDonald’s All Schools Track and Field Championships last May 6 with more than 500 students from 19 schools participating in the event at the Oleai Sports Complex.
Among the athletes, four stood the tallest and were recognized by NMA for their sterling performances: Tyrone Omar of Marianas High School, Jacque Wonenberg of Hopwood Junior High School, Jonathan Welson of Cha Cha Oceanview Junior High School, and Reylyn Sapong of Koblerville Elementary School.
At the same time, the runners and throwers were doing their thing at the Oleai track and field facility, the women soccer players of the Northern Mariana Islands Football (Soccer) Association held their championship game a few kilometers down the road at the Garapan Elementary School pitch.
Three weeks of intense regular season play came down to the title match between Marianas Eye-yeye-yeye and UMDA Crushers with the former taking the tiara of the inaugural season of the women’s league on Sarah Helbert’s lone goal.
The paddlers of the Saipan Outrigger Canoe Club also had their moment under the sun, as they completed the 42-kilometer First Inter-island Extreme Saipan Tinian Adventure, or FIESTA, on May 6.
The crew of Joe Przyuski, Eric O’Malley, Ana Diaz, Dennis Chapla, Wayne Bramlett, Gil Birnbrich, Sonny Downer, Shelly Kremer, Jill Vanderkin, and Richard Sikkel made the historic crossing and were rewarded upon reaching the shores of Tinian by taking part in the Tinian San Jose Fiesta.
In tennis, Vivien Lee and Lila Mailman squared off in the women’s 4.0 singles championship of the Guam International Tennis Open at the Hilton Resort with Lee edging Mailman, 6-1, 6-3.
The Micronesian Games Organizing Council also got a boost from sponsors this past week with Joeten Charitable Foundation, UMDA, Security Title, and CNMI Youth Foundation, Inc. donating a total of $46,000 for the quadrennial event’s staging here on Saipan from June 23 to July 2.
