Two of the top squads continued to find success on the San Antonio sand Thursday evening as Lite U Up and Ying Yang Clan scored sweeps to extend their winning streaks to three games in as many attempts as the 7th Annual Spring Co-ed Four’s Beach Volleyball League wrapped up its second week of action.

Lite U Up (3-0) lit up the previously undefeated Dirk Digglers (2-1) squad by a combined score of 33-8 in straight sets led by Dan “Barno” Westphal, Linda Anasta-cio, Dale “Dread Pirate” Roberts, and Leo “Baby I” Wania.

After dominating the first set 11-1, Lite U Up faced a little stiffer competition as Laurie Peterka came up with a battery of big hits. Despite her hard work and that of her teammates, the Digglers fell, 11-5, to cede the overall win.

The Digglers had a chance to add a set to their season total, but even with talented players like Rob Jordan, Kaycee Rengaelur, Kirk Pala-cios, and Vison Takahashy going all out, there wasn’t enough gas in the tank as they fell again, 11-2.

The next chance for the Dirk Digglers is on Tuesday, May 16, when they try to scratch out a win against Chafed Grundle at 7:30pm, while Lite U Up returns on Thursday, May 18, at 6:30pm against the MHS Dolphin Leapers.

Ying Yang Clan 3, Sand In My Pants 0

“The Chair Man” Max Kuan’s Ying Yang Clan (3-0) continued to put points on the board and notch wins in its belt as they shook out a victory from Sand In My Pants (1-1) in straight sets.

Kevin Carey, Jon Cramer, E.J. Lee, J.R. Ngeskebei, and Allan Weber were unable to stave off defeat as the Ying Yang Clan scored convincing 11-1 and 11-3 wins in the first two sets to take the game, but the Los Pantalones played hard to get in the finale by pushing Kuan’s Clan to a 13-11 decision.

Kuan played well in his own right, as did teammates Apple Sampson, Mili Saiki, and rookie Dillon Lee, but seasoned veteran Bill Owens repeatedly laid the hammer down on their vertically challenged counterparts and caught Sandra Arnold’s team with their pants down.

MHS Dolphin Splashers 2, MHS Dolphin Leapers 1

There was a rash of Dolphin on Dolphin crime on Thursday evening as the students battled for a win at the PIC, but the MHS Dolphin Splashers (1-2) defeated the MHS Dolphin Leapers (1-3) in one of the most hotly contested matches of the night.

After eking out a narrow 12-10 win in the opener, the Splashers fell three points shy of clinching the game when the Leapers bagged the second 11-8 to event the contest at a set apiece.

The rubber match proved just as exciting as each team exchanged sideouts like tourists swapping yen for dollars, but in the end it was a determined effort form the Splashers that proved to be the difference as they earned their first win of the season with a thrilling 11-9 score in the clincher.

The Splashers return to the court next Tuesday against Victoria’s Secret at 6:30pm while the Leapers take on first place Lite U Up on Thursday at 6:30pm

MHS Dolphin Divers 2, Last Call 1

The MHS Dolphin Divers became the third scholastic team to earn a victory on Thursday night when they opened up a can against the Clubmate-laden Last Call squad on their home turf by taking the first two sets before ceding the third.

Even the veteran leadership of Evan Hunsberger was not enough to stifle the students as the Divers scored 11-6 and 11-7 wins in the opening sets to clinch the game before dropping the third 11-9.

The Divers refused to let up after posting the win in the record books, but they were unable to complete the sweep after both teams battled for the final set. Their shot at a win streak takes place on Tuesday at 5:30pm when they face the Splashers while Last Call tries for their virgin win against Just Put It In later that night at 8:30pm.
