Ex-teacher pleads guilty to ‘ice’ and gun charges
A former teacher who was charged with possession of methamphetamine or “ice” and a firearm entered a guilty plea yesterday in federal court.
Juan I. Quitugua, 41, waived the indictment and pleaded guilty to the superseding information charging him with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and user in possession of a firearm.
U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Alex R. Munson accepted Quitugua’s plea and set the sentencing for Aug. 15, 2006.
Munson granted the U.S. government’s recommendation to place the defendant on bail with the same conditions as the court previously set—with one exemption: that he will be relieved of the electronic monitoring condition.
Members of the Drug Enforcement Administration-CNMI Task Force arrested Quitugua on July 15, 2005 for allegedly selling “ice” to their confidential source and for possession of a gun.
The superseding information charged the defendant with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and user in possession of a firearm.
Assistant U.S. attorney Tim Moran stated in the information that in June and July 2005, Quitugua possessed with intent to distribute .25 and .50 grams of “ice.”
Moran said that on July 16, 2005, the defendant, being an unlawful user of “ice”, possessed a Smith & Wesson .38 cal. revolver. (Ferdie de la Torre)
