‘Mafnas will screen candidates for DPS commissioner position’
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial said that he has tasked acting Department of Public Safety commissioner Ray Mafnas with the job of looking for the right person to be the new commissioner.
In an interview with the Saipan Tribune Thursday, Fitial said that Mafnas won’t be the permanent DPS commissioner as it is his [Mafnas] job to seek for contenders, screen them and submit their names to him.
The governor said he chose Mafnas to be the acting commissioner because he has a criminal justice degree and has management skills.
Fitial said the person they want to be the commissioner should meet three criteria: highly qualified, highly competent, and highly ethical.
Fitial said he also asked Mafnas to provide him with an updated organizational chart of DPS for his review and approval.
The governor said he has not seen former commissioner Ernest Mark Williams after he terminated the official on April 28, 2006.
Williams was let go after “failing to establish a good working relationship with his subordinates, including key command officers in the department.”
Since his termination, Williams has opted to keep silent about the issue. But sources said he is expected to give his side soon.
