PIC, DFS give to SAIWAI March Against Cancer effort
Saipan Walking Association Inc. has enlisted the help of two friends to increase its donations to the 4th Annual March Against Cancer set for today and tomorrow at the Hopwood Junior High School.
The walking association’s spokesperson Mario Espeleta received two checks of $150 each from known SAIWAI supporters Pacific Islands Club and Duty Free Shoppers in simple ceremonies at the Pacific Development, Inc. offices in Garapan last week.
“Employees of both companies are very active SAIWAI members and PIC and DFS have also continued to support our programs, and in return SAIWAI will give their donations to the March Against Cancer,” said Espeleta.
Izumi Castro, Carol Techur, and Luz Ito represented Duty Free Shoppers in the check presentation, while Cole Pritchard was the lone envoy from Pacific Islands Club. President Jesus Guerrero and vice president Koichi Matsumura led SAIWAI members in receiving the contributions.
Proceeds from the event, which was previously called, Relay for Life, would go to the development of the first Cancer Registry for the CNMI.
The 4th Annual March Against Cancer will once again include the Survivor’s Lap and the Luminary Ceremony, where thousands of paper bags with candles inside will be lighted around the field by those who would like to honor or dedicate a candle to their loved ones affected by cancer.
The event will also feature schools, family, company, and government teams that will be selling food, drinks and other items as well as the walking or running around the Hopwood track. Fifteen teams reportedly have already confirmed their participation in the relay. (Mark Rabago)
