GUAM—The 2006 International Friendship Basketball Tournament kicked off without a hitch Monday night at the University of Guam Fieldhouse.

Sponsored by the UOG Endowment Foundation, the tournament started with Philippine Amateur Basketball All-Stars facing off against the Guam National Men’s Basketball Team.

The PABL All-Stars had too much experience on their side as they walloped the Nationals, 102-83. The Nationals were made up mostly of high school players

Korea University, meanwhile, toyed with Naval Station Guam as the players from the Land of the Morning Calm gave the servicemen a shooting clinic en route to a convincing 109-86 victory.

The Nationals took on Big Navy in last night’s opener while the defending champion of the University Athletics Association of the Philippines, Far Eastern University, squared off against Korea University in the second game. Results were not available as off press time.

The 2006 International Friendship Basketball Tournament will be played all throughout the week and into Saturday when the championship game is scheduled. (Eduardo C. Siguenza)
