Senate President Joseph M. Mendiola will serve as acting governor for a few hours today in place of Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, who is in Guam.

Mendiola said his acting status would last from about 7am to 2pm.

He said the governor flew to Guam to meet with representatives from the U.S. military headed by the Commander of the U.S. Naval Forces Marianas.

“I’ll be acting governor for a few hours,” said Mendiola, a party mate of the governor under the Covenant Party.

Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez has not been back from Washington D.C., where he is attending a Coral Reef Initiative annual conference. The environmental event was held last week.

As acting governor, Mendiola is scheduled to speak in honor of World War II veterans at the American Memorial Park at 9:30am today.

Following that, Mendiola will sign a proclamation for Police Officer’s Week at the Governor’s Conference Room on Capitol Hill.
