A group of workers who were playing cards outside their barracks scampered for safety when a man allegedly approached, stabbed one with a knife, and chased them in San Roque early Monday morning.

Witnesses said the suspect, 44-year-old Silvestre Ascura Hannibal, turned off the power to the barracks before responding police officers spotted and subdued him.

Police said the victim, Rodolfo Sasota Ramirez, suffered a cut to the neck and shoulder. He was brought to the Commonwealth Health Center and later released after treatment.

Hannibal was brought to the Superior Court yesterday on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and disturbing the peace.

Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo imposed a $50,000 cash bail for the defendant’s temporary liberty and set the preliminary hearing for May 18 at 9am.

Police said Ramirez and other friends were playing cards at 2am outside the Nikko Hotel barracks when Hannibal came out from his room holding a butcher knife.

Hannibal suddenly allegedly stabbed Ramirez on the right side of the neck, then again stabbed him on the upper right shoulder.

The victim and his friends fled their seats and ran to the front of the barracks.

Hannibal, still holding the knife, chased the group. The bloodied victim ran to the front parking lot of the barracks then locked himself inside his room.

Hannibal walked to the generator house and turned off the power, plunging the entire barracks in darkness.

Police came and the power was restored. Police spotted Hannibal hiding in the bushes at the back of the building. The officers subdued the suspect and disarmed him.

The motive was not clear yet. It was also not indicated in the report whether the suspect was drunk.
