Na Hee Heo, a Marianas High School senior and current vice president of the Marianas High School National Junior Honor Society, has been named a recipient of a National Honor Society scholarship sponsored by the National Association of Secondary Principals. Two hundred national NHS winners were chosen from among more than 6,400 applications. Each national winner will receive a $1,000 college scholarship.

“We are thrilled to hear of Na Hee’s success in receiving this prestigious award,” said MHS principal Karen Borja. “Receiving a national NHS scholarship is both an impressive achievement and a rarity for a student in the CNMI. We’re proud of Na Hee and thankful for all of the students, faculty, staff, and community members who promote and support our National Honor Society.

Participating high school National Junior Honor Society chapters from across the country nominated two senior high members to compete in this year’s program. Winners were selected on the basis of their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience; and academic record. They also were required to write an easy.

“We are proud to recognize Na Hee Heo for her outstanding achievements and contributions to her school,” said Rocco Marano, national director for the NHS. “Students nominated for the NHS scholarship demonstrate not only academic excellence but also extraordinary performance in service, leadership, and character—traits that are more important now than ever before.”

While at Marianas High School, Heo has also held in leadership positions with the Japanese Club, the Martine Biology Club, and the Outrigger Canoe Club, a group with whom she participated in the most recent mini-South Pacific Games in Palau. She has participated in student exchange programs to Japan, competes in National Forensic Leagues competitions, acts in school plays, runs cross country, and played competitive tennis and beach volleyball. She has played viola in public recitals and is deeply involved in her church. This fall she plans to attend Hawaii Pacific University to study Nursing.

The National Honor Society and the National Junior Honor Society are the nation’s premier organizations recognizing outstanding middle school and high school students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. NHS and HJHS are proudly sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

The NASSP—the preeminent organization and national voice for middle school and high school leaders—also sponsors the National Association of Students Councils, which promotes and provides leadership development opportunities to prepare and empower students to serve their schools and communities.
