$6K worth of scholarships available to HS graduates
The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarships are now available for eligible high school graduates for this year.
Commissioner of Education Rita H. Inos announced yesterday that the Central Office is seeking applicants for the federally funded Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarships for high school students graduating in school year 2005-2006.
Inos said that each scholarship is a four-year scholarship worth $1,500 per year or $6,000 total scholarship.
To qualify for the scholarship, the commissioner said applicants should be 2006 graduates of public or private secondary schools in the CNMI. They should also be legal residents of the Commonwealth and a U.S. citizen.
Applicants must have applied or been accepted for enrollment at a college or university and not be in default on any federal loan or obligation. They should file with the college or university that they plan to attend and must provide a statement of the Selective Service Registration Status.
Inos is encouraging all senior students that could meet the criteria to visit the PSS Central Office on the third floor of the NMI Retirement Fund Building on Capitol Hill.
All interested graduating senior students this year must obtain the Robert C. Byrd scholarship application packages from the PSS Federal Programs Office.
“This scholarship is highly competitive—minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale,” Inos added.
Inos further explained that there should be, at a minimum, of 12 of these highly competitive scholarships at $1,500 per year for four years provided for the CNMI’s graduating students this year.
The deadline for submission of all Robert C. Byrd applications and required documents is on May 26. Interested applicants should contact PSS Federal Programs advisor Tim Thornburgh at the PSS Federal Programs Office. Thornburgh could be reached at 237-3065.
