Let your stories be told in Marianas Monologues
In the aftermath of the successful staging of the Vagina Monologues, a group is planning an evening of Monologues written and performed by the people of the Marianas themselves.
Planning committee member Barbara Sher said the organization wants the public’s input in “creating a true picture of the islands.”
“The Marianas Monologues strive to be a slice of life experiences, thoughts or conversations from the perspective of Chamorros, Carolinians, Koreans, Chinese, Filipinos, Bangladeshis, Russians, haoles, and the many other cultures that live and work in the Marianas,” said Sher.
The first planning meeting was held Monday evening at Coffee Care on Capitol Hill.
Sher said the monologues aim to discover the thoughts and stories of people from the CNMI, such as what’s it like to be a factory worker, a merchant marine, or a cab driver.
She said they also want to know the thoughts of people living on the islands. “What was it like to grow up being Carolinian? What are the thoughts a Russians coming to this culture?” asked Sher.
Share the conversation or misunderstanding you had with someone from another culture or even your own, she added.
Sher said the possibilities are endless and the stories the islands hold are abundant. She is inviting everyone to submit their ideas. She added that the stories could be written in monologue form and submitted to mariana.monologues@gmail.com.
Writers have the option of performing their own monologue or having another perform it. Performance will be this fall, “so take the summer to get your creative juices flowing,” said Sher.
