Tuitele replaces Inos as PREL board head
Malaetele Dr. Lui Tuitele, the director of Education of the American Samoa Department of Education, has taken over as chair of the Pacific Resources for Education and Learning’s board of directors, replacing CNMI Education Commissioner Dr. Rita Hocog Inos.
Inos, who heads the CNMI’s Public School System, had recently announced her retirement.
Tuitele has also been selected to chair the Advisory Committee for the Pacific Comprehensive Center.
Tuitele began his career in education as a science teacher in American Samoa in 1970. Since becoming Director of Education in 2003, he has worked to ensure that all teachers and principals are highly qualified and have access to professional development, that standards are integrated into education, and that Samoan language and culture are strengthened in the schools.
Dr. Tuitele’s title, Malaetele, was bestowed upon him in the village of Leone, American Samoa. In Samoa, the title of chief precedes the education title out of respect for the Samoan culture.
PREL’s board consists of the Chief State School Officers of the 10 jurisdictions in the region it serves—American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, Hawai’i, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau—and 10 constituent members.
Other officers of PREL’s board are vice chair Surangel Whipps, Jr., president & CEO of Surangel & Sons Co., Republic of Palau; Treasurer Zita Pangelinan, president & CEO of Pacific Human Resource Services Inc., Guam; and Secretary Larry Vogel, president & CEO of Y. Hata & Co. Ltd., Hawai’i.
PREL is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation that serves the educational community in the U.S.-affiliated Pacific islands, the continental United States, and countries throughout the world. PREL bridges the gap between research, theory, and practice in education and works collaboratively with schools and school systems to provide services that range from curriculum development to assessment and evaluation.
