Every year the American Bar Association promotes Law Day, a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law. Law Day underscores how law and the legal process have contributed to the freedoms that all Americans share. This year’s theme for law day is “Liberty Under Law: Separate Branches; Balanced Powers.” The following are the events scheduled during the celebrations.

ATTORNEY ADMISSION CEREMONY

On April 28, 2006, the NMI Law Day Celebrations continue with the admission of five new attorneys to the practice of law. The attorney admission ceremony will take place at 10:30am in the NMI Supreme Court and is open to the public. The ceremony will be a joint session of both the NMI Supreme and Superior Courts and recognizes the achievement and sacrifice of the five individuals who have reached an important milestone in their professional career.

THE AG’S CUP SPEECH COMPETITION

The Law Day celebration will culminate this year, as every year, with the prestigious 23rd Annual Attorney General’s Cup Speech competition on May 5 at the Rota Judicial Center. Eight out of our 13 Commonwealth high schools are slated to go to Rota and give speeches on this year’s topic: Locals, foreigners, and a comprehensive CNMI immigration policy.

In their speeches, the students will have to address such issues as: What should the CNMI’s relationship with the word look like; what is a local; what is a foreigner; what are our obligations to locals and to foreigners; and whether or not the CNMI should develop a comprehensive immigrations policy with regards to different nations and to immigrants with different skill sets.

The Law Day celebrations are made possible by the extensive collaboration of the Commonwealth Judiciary, the Northern Mariana Bar Association, the Northern Marianas Judiciary Historical Society, and the Office of the Attorney General. (PR)
