16 advance to next round in Aon Insurance tennis

Play in the inaugural Aon Insurance Tennis Tournament entered its second day last Friday at the American Memorial Park tennis courts with 16 more players advancing to the next round of the singles competition.

Good friends Buddy Garote and Richard Asuncion secured a second round meeting against each other in the men’s 4.5 after Garote beat Edwin Maratas via walkover and Asuncion got past Hector Benitez, 6-2, 6-4.

Tony Santos, meanwhile, upset top seed Father Ryan Jimenez in their second round match in the men’s 4.0, 7-5, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals where he awaits the winner of the bout between Art Borromeo and Jess Pacheco.

Rodel Macasinag, Lorenzo Divino, Mario Buensuceso, Dr. Gary Ramsey, and Ramon Angeles also got out of the first round, while Jaime Hagos advanced to the third following a walkover win over Ed Taniegra in the men’s 3.0.

Macasinag defeated Sunny Shakir, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6); Divino beat John Jenkins, 6-1, 6-1; Buensuceso got the better of Boy Cruz, 6-3, 7-5; Dr. Ramsey triumphed over Efren Segovia, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5); and Ramon Angeles won via walkover against Alfredo Quiroz.

In the men’s 2.0, players advancing were Aldrin Sta. Ana, Noel Biglete, Romy Pandoro, James Camacho, and Fermin Valle, while action in the women’s 3.0 saw Tinian’s Ellen Uy secure a finals berth with a 7-5, 7-5 conquest of Cecil Obaldo and youth netter Thea Minor win by walkover against Emily Kwon.

The singles competition will continue throughout the weekend and on to first few days of the following week. It will be followed by the doubles in the latter part of next week.

Doubles will feature play in men’s, women’s, and mixed open, men’s, women’s, and mixed 4.0, and men’s, women’s, and mixed 3.0. STA will hold a draw for the doubles and mixed doubles competition tomorrow, April 23, 6pm at the AMP clubhouse.
