The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library in the CNMI has been selected by the American Libraries Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities to receive a select number of books for students from Kinder to 12th grade.

The two U.S.-based groups will be providing the “We the People ‘Becoming American’ Bookshelf.”

Technical Services librarian Julia E. Allen said the library would be receiving 15 books that are expected to reach the shores of Saipan in the next two weeks.

“The library submitted a multigenerational program proposal with our application, and the programs must occur between May 2006 and March 2007,” said Allen.

The library will be announcing upcoming program dates as they are scheduled and she asks the public, if they have ideas for the promotion of these titles or if they want to help with the planning and coordinating of activities, to contact her or Erlinda Naputi at 235-7322.

“If you are a teacher and would like to schedule a class visit to use these materials for a special session, please request our class visit form and submit it at least three business days prior to the desired visit dates,” Allen said.

The books provided are: Sherry Garland’s The Lotus Seed, Riki Levinson’s Watch the Stars Come Out, Allen Say’s Grandfather’s Journey for kindergarten through 3rd grade.

For the 4th grade through 6th grade, the books are: Russell Freedman’s Immigrant Kids, Virginia Hamilton’s The People Could Fly: African Black Folktales, Washington Irving’s Rip Van Winkle, and Betty Bao Lord’s In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson.

Seventh graders and 8th graders will enjoy: Harold Keith’s Rifles, Walter Dean Myers’ The Glory Field, Betty Smith’s A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and Laurence Yep Dragonwings.

For 9th grade through 12th grade the books are: Willa Cather’s Death Comes for the Archbishop, Louis P. Masur’s edited version of Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, Ernesto Galarza’s Barrio Boy, Ole Edvart Rolvaag’s Giants in the Earth.
