Last week, Saipan hosted a rare event in Micronesia. A certified wound specialist from the U.S. mainland came to Saipan to instruct a two-day course entitled “Current Concepts in Wound Healing.”

The course was an overwhelming success and there has been positive feedback from all 100 participants. Healthcare professionals from Saipan, Tinian, Guam, Pohnpei and Marshall Islands attended the conference. The knowledge obtained from this course will be combined with current practice and past experiences to facilitate a higher standard of care for wound patients in the CNMI and parts of Micronesia.

I would like to thank all of those who assisted in the organization of this event over the past six months. The planning involved in an event of this magnitude was more work that I ever imagined it would be, and I greatly appreciate the support I received.

Special thanks goes out to: the staff of the Physical Therapy Department at CHC for being my right hand; Pam Carhill, Jamie Beavis, Chris Linder, Thelma Duenas and Susan Yangirelfil; Kim Prinz and the CHC Volunteers Association for assisting with fundraising, registration fees and host facility details; Tayna Camacho and Ling Rabauliman of the Diabetes Prevention and Control Program for their encouragement and financial support; the CNMI Nursing Board for providing participants with continuing education credit; Hyatt Regency Saipan for the raffle donation and excellent service as our host facility; Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan for accommodating our guest speaker; the hospital administration, specifically Joe Santos DSHA, Lynn Tenorio DSPHA, Lena Villagomez CFO, and Joe Kevin Villagomez, Secretary of Health for supporting me in this endeavor. And last but not least, the healthcare providers that attended. This course could never have happened without you! Thank you, Si Yuuse Maase yan Olomwaay!
