Summer youth employment, training program
The Workforce Investment Agency announced yesterday the upcoming Summer Youth and Employment Training Program that will take place for a period of six weeks beginning June 12-July 21, 2006.
This program aims to provide the young and future CNMI workforce the opportunity to gain a “meaningful work experience” within both employment sectors—public and private. In line with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Youth Vision, the program also gives primary focus to those who are at the “most risk and neediest,” so they will be given the opportunity to be a part of the new workforce “supply pipeline” needed by businesses to fill job vacancies in today’s knowledge economy.
Prior to being placed in the working business environment, qualifying participants will be required to participate in various workshops such as telephone etiquette, customer service, work ethics and personal grooming to better prepare and assist them in their short six weeks of training and employment during the summer. These initial training workshops will be further enhanced and complemented with other actual work experience training by the respective employers throughout the six-week period.
“WIA extends its utmost appreciation to all the public agencies and private companies for opening the doors of training and employment opportunities for the CNMI’s youth and encourages all involved to continuously be ‘partners’ with WIA in promoting and encouraging our young workforce in pursuing their education and to acquire the necessary employment skills in order for them to be competitive in both the local and global workforce,” the agency said in a statement.
Applications for the summer youth program is available at Kagman, Southern and Marianas High Schools as well as at the office of WIA located on Capitol Hill, Bldg. 1215. Completed applications can be turned in to WIA no later than May 26, 2006. Those applying for the summer program must be 16 years old by June 11, 2006.
