DYS brings parent dev’t to villages
The Division of Youth Services of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs is starting a series of village workshops aimed at making parenting skills development available at the grassroots level.
The Parent Development Workshops, which begin tomorrow, April 22, at Dandan Elementary School, is in line with the observance of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month.
“This is an extension of the Parent Leadership Conference held last February,” said DYS Volunteer Program coordinator Vivian Sablan. “Working with the schools enables us to reach out to more parents.”
First Lady Josie Fitial and Sandy Skiibang, a parent leader from Dandan Elementary School, will open Saturday’s workshop with remarks.
Other presenters include Jackie Quitugua giving an update on the Public School System; parent education facilitator Andie Dela Cruz speaking on Common Sense Parenting classes; Patricia Coleman of NMC-CREES on Healthy Eating Habits; Louise Oakley of the Department of Public Health on diabetes; DYS Child Protection Unit caseworkers Julian Camacho, Alex Olopai and Bill Limes on Child Abuse and Neglect; and Cris Sablan of the Community Guidance Center on Substance Abuse.
“To impact more families, we need to reach out and meet them where they’re at. These workshops are a step in that direction,” said DCCA Secretary Daisy C. Villagomez-Bier.
This Saturday’s workshop is targeting parents in the Dandan and San Vicente areas. Parents may register by calling Dandan Elementary School or San Vicente Elementary School. Additional workshops will be held on May 6 at Saipan Southern High School and on May 13 at Chacha Middle School for families in those areas. Workshops will continue next school year, as well. (PR)
