NMHC urged to work quickly on Tottotville
The House of Representatives has urged the Northern Marianas Housing Corp. to act faster in addressing the problems at Tottotville subdivision.
The lawmakers, in House Resolution 15-34, noted that the construction defects at the first NMHC-built subdivision were well documented and much discussed in the media.
The EFC Engineers and Architects firm has also submitted recommendations on how to improve Totttotville.
But the problems persist to this day.
“The homeowners have endured these intolerable conditions for too long and deserve an immediate resolution to these design and construction problems,” the resolution stated. “The Northern Marianas Housing Corp. must work quickly with the contractors to rectify this situation.”
NMHC built Tottotville in 2000 to provide housing for low- to moderate-income families. Currently, over 40 homeowners reside in the subdivision.
These homeowners, however, have complained of numerous home defects including leaks from the ceiling, window sills and exterior doors, rattling water pipes, peeling paint, damaged roof tiles, and termite infestation.
Because of the NMHC’s alleged failure to response to individual requests for assistance, homeowners have formed Tottotville Homeowners Association to give themselves a collective voice.
