Two Japanese certified divers were injured after they nearly drowned at Shark Point, west of Nikko Hotel Saipan, Saturday afternoon, police said yesterday.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Ken I. Concepcion said the victims, both males, were flown by helicopter to Guam for decompression treatment.

Concepcion said an attending physician disclosed that one victim was conscious and was placed under observation, while the second was unconscious, but in stable condition and was in trauma.

The DPS spokesman said the conscious victim told DPS Boating Safety Unit personnel that he and the other victim had gone diving, along with three other friends, outside the reef at Shark Point.

During their 10-minute dive at 170 feet, the victim said he saw his companion shaking, as though having a convulsion.

He said the victim came up to him for help. Another friend also came to help.

The victims were brought by a boat to the Smiling Cove Marina, where emergency medical technicians transported them to the Commonwealth Health Center.

A CHC doctor said the unconscious victim had some fluid in his lungs, Concepcion said.
