Registration for summer classes at the Northern Marianas College began yesterday, while “current” freshmen registration is set to start this Wednesday.

NMC president Tony V. Deleon Guerrero said in a statement last week that, despite the cut in the college’s budget, the 2006 summer schedule will begin as expected this week.

He said the ongoing student registration for those who completed their English requirements already began in earnest yesterday.

New students could also take classes and get a break in fall classes and the new tuition rate that will go into effect then, he added.

The English Placement Test was offered earlier this month, but those still needing to take the test can take it on May 15.

The Math Placement Test, which now costs $25, will be given on May 16 to 17. Since both tests require fees, payment must be made before the tests.

Deleon Guerrero said the tuition increase passed by the NMC Board of Regents last month will only take effect in Fall semester this year.

“So students wishing to beat the increase are encouraged to take classes this summer,” he said, adding that, although NMC incurred a budget cut this year, the college will still strive to produce quality programs and services for the benefit of the entire CNMI community.

The increase in other fees that the BOR also okayed will be applied starting the summer sessions.

For this summer session, Deleon Guerrero said the college would offer another wide range of courses that include Adult Basic Education and Community Development Institute courses.

“So this year’s summer schedule is a complete listing of all that the college has to offer on Saipan, Tinian and Rota campuses,” he added.

The Adult Basic Education program will be offering a wide variety of General Education Development courses this summer. The placement tests for this program will be conducted in May and interested students need to contact the ABE office on Saipan.

Summer classes will last six, nine and 12 weeks. Classes will start on May 22 and on July 3 for the second six-week session. The college also offers classes during the day but other classes will also be held in the evening for those who are currently working and for high school students who want to get a head start on their college degrees.

The NMC-Cooperative Research, Education and Extension Service will also be offering workshops this summer. Their short courses offerings are not limited to just agriculture either.

They have a ‘Youth Leadership Skills’ course for students aged eight to 12, ‘Youth Money Management’ for 12 to 15 years old and nutrition workshops for parents.

The Small Business Development Center will also be offering courses on Saipan, Rota and Tinian this summer. SBDC’s one-day workshops will be able to address all manner of workplace issues such as “Resolving Conflicts” to “Improving Employee Work Habits.”

Finally, the NMC Community Development Institute will also be providing activities, from learning English, Chinese or Korean to Youth Development Programs.
