Wakai Nekko No Kai arriving tomorrow
The biggest floating university, the Wakai Nekko No Kai Ocean University, will make its 38th visit to the islands tomorrow when it docks at the Port of Saipan at 7:30am Sunday for a day visit.
This year’s visit by the Tokyo-based floating university will once again be made more significant with the participation of two Northern Marianas College students in its voyage from Tokyo to Saipan.
Local students will be at the port to welcome over 300 students, teachers and the crew of the university aboard the ship, called NCC Fuji Maru.
NMC president Tony V. Deleon Guerrero said Hideo Kato, president of the Tokyo-based Wakai Nekko No Kai Ocean University program, recently announced the participation of two Northern Marianas College students in its upcoming annual voyage from Tokyo to Saipan.
Elsa Yoshida, currently pursuing an associate degree in business management, and Kaye M. Christian, a liberal arts major, departed for Tokyo, Japan, last April 10 to participate in the educational cultural exchange program.
This year marks the 19th consecutive year that Wakai Nekko No Kai has sponsored CNMI students’ participation in its weeklong Ocean University voyage, said Deleon Guerrero.
Over the past 38 years, Wakai Nekko No Kai has brought over 16,000 Japanese visitors to the CNMI as part of its Ocean University cultural exchange program.
Pacific Development Inc. and the Marianas Visitors Authority, along with the CNMI-WNNK committee composed of representatives from NMC, Marianas High School, Saipan Southern High School, Kagman High School, Mt. Carmel School, Grace Christian Academy, the Governor’s Office, and the Saipan Mayor’s Office, are working hard to organize a successful visit.
The visiting Japanese group will have a cultural exchange activity programs at the Micro Beach in Garapan tomorrow noon and a reception inside the ship in the evening.
