The Chalan Kanoa Kings exploded in the fourth quarter and eliminated the Garapan Rollers II from further action in the ongoing 2006 Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League playoffs yesterday at the Garapan Basketball Court.

The Kings were enjoying just a five-point edge heading into the final eight minutes of play before breaking loose for 20 points to advance with a 47-30 victory.

It took a while before the Kings’ offense clicked as they only scored four points in the opening period, which ended with the team trailing by a point.

Chalan Kanoa recovered in the second and outgunned G-II, 12-10, to take a 16-15 lead at the break, then increased their lead as Edward Salito worked his way for seven points in the third period to spearhead an 11-7 attack for a 27-22 spread.

The tightly fought battle soon turned into a rout as Scott Blewett caught fire and waxed hot from the field for 10 markers, while Salito and Brian Dela Cruz combined for eight points to push the Kings to the 17-point victory.

Blewett led the Kings with 18 points while Salito supported him with 17 points.

Mike Bondoc and Jason Palacios paced G-II with 13 and 10 points.

With the win, the Kings earned the right to face the San Antonio Sixers II, which defeated the Matansa Sparks last April 6. The two were scheduled to battle yesterday, but results were not available as of press time.

Today’s bout will feature the H.O.M Saints taking on pennant champion Sixers I in one-half of the semifinals. Playoffs resume on April 19 with the winner of the Sixers II-Kings bout taking on second-seed G-Rollers I. The two teams that lose will face each other for third place on April 20, while the two winners will play for all the marbles on April 21.

Kings 47 – Blewett 18, Salito 17, Dela Cruz 8, Catap 2, Pangelinan 2.

G-II 30 – Bondoc 13, Palacios 10, Danas 5, Peters 2.

Scoring by quarters: 4-5, 16-15, 27-22, 47-30.

Referees: Joe Mettao and Jovie Omar.
