The Northern Marianas College Foundation Open is just around the corner and one the biggest golf tournaments in the islands has already secured support from various individuals and businesses.

Joining that group of supporters yesterday was Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, who has committed to playing when the tournament hits the Laolao Bay Golf Resort west course this April 22, with a shotgun start at 7am.

“Because I have already proclaimed April to be NMC month, and in recognition of NMC’s 25th Silver Anniversary, I would like to call on our community to support our local colleagues,” Fitial said during a press conference yesterday. “As you know, NMC, virtually with every government entity, is struggling through a severe budget crisis so I therefore appeal to our private business sector to help fill the funding gap by supporting NMC’s private fundraising efforts.”

“Come out and support this special golf tournament. We need all your support, contribution, and generosity,” the governor added.

Present during the conference were NMC board member Joanna Pai, NMC Foundation executive director Mark Mendiola, and NMC Foundation Open chairman Michael von Seibonthal.

Interested golfers can avail of the early bird fee of $85, but must register by April 15 to do so. Golfers registering after April 15 will be required to pay a $100 fee.

The tournament will feature competition in six flights—Championship, A, B, C, Women’s, and Seniors—with each of the top three finishers in each flight receiving cash and a trophy.

First place winners will pocket $500 plus a roundtrip ticket to anywhere Continental Micronesian flies, except Honolulu and Narita. Second place winners get $300 while $200 will be awarded to third place winners.

The tournament also features several hole-in-one prizes, such as a Hyundai Accent courtesy of Triple J Motors on Hole No. 3, $25,000 from Bank of Hawaii on Hole No. 7, a 2007 Toyota Camry courtesy of Microl Toyota on Hole No. 13, and $25,000 from Aon Insurance. Caronel Watch Center also sponsors the hole-in-one challenge.
