The Shark rules April roll-off
Veteran kegler Mark “The Shark” Halstead pocketed some extra cash Monday night as he ruled the Pepsi April King of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament at the Capital Bowling Center.
Halstead, who bowls most of his impressive games at the Saipan Bowling Center, said his win was due simply to sheer luck as everything just fell in place for him on Sunday.
It was then that the veteran recorded the best score of the two-day tournament, as he started off with a respectable 188 in his first game before heating up and knocking down 233 pins in his next two games. He then closed with 181 pins for a total of 835 pins and an average of 208.75 pins per game.
“I was feeling good and lucky,” he said. “I’m not really a good bowler over here but I got lucky. I just wanted to come out here and enjoy and get lucky. “
Halstead returned on Monday to try to better his mark and still finished with a respectable 754 pins, which was still good enough for the seventh-best total.
Finishing 34 pins behind Halstead was Paul Pangelinan, who had a hot start by leaving his mark on 223 pins in his opening game on Monday. He continued to sizzle with 200 pins in the second game and another 223 in his third game, but cooled off for a pedestrian 155 in the fourth game for an 801 total. He averaged 200.25 pins per game.
Mike Guirey placed third with a total of 794 pins after his ball caused 191 pins to fall in his first game, 208 in his second, 200 in his third, and 195 in his final game.
With the win, Halstead pocketed $150, while Pangelinan and Guirey won $70 and $40.
For his part, Jon Eparwa broke into the top half of the list courtesy of his Sunday performance as he knocked down 774 pins to win $35, while Simon Manacop won $30 by finishing with 760 pins. Also leaving with cash was Celso Agui, who won $20 for placing sixth with 757 pins.
Others making it to the Top 10 were Alex Cacdac (745 pinfalls), Ador Dimaano (741), and Dannie Robles (739).
The monthly bowling competition is sponsored by Pacific Trading Co. and organized by the Saipan Bowling Association. It culminates with a season-ending championship tournament.
