Budweiser Cup eyes April 22 start
The 4th Annual Budweiser Cup-BANMI Island-wide Basketball League will kick off on April 22 at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, according to BANMI official Abner Venus.
Venus, in a telephone interview, said six teams have already showed interest in participating in the Commonwealth’s premier basketball competition.
Heading the list is three-time defending champion Toyota-Tundra-Ol’Aces. The Oleai-based team will be joined by the CNMI National Basketball Team coached by Rufino Aguon, Budweiser-Coca-Cola UFO Inter-Organizational Basketball League champion Samahang Ilokano at Pangasinense, 2006 Inter-Government Basketball League pennant champion Tinian, last year’s IGBL overall champion No Zone, and an all-star team sponsored by Saipan Uniforms and assembled by Venus himself.
Venus said the men’s island-wide will be played only every Saturday after the Women’s Basketball League, which lone game is expected to start at 2pm. He said two Bud Cup games will be on tap for the weekend with the first game tentatively set at 6pm with the second match immediately following.
The BANMI official said the start of the Bud Cup was decided during the organization’s monthly board meeting last Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium conference room.
