Chuukese Association trashathon nets 500 lbs of trash
Members of the Chuukese Catholic Youth Association collected about 500 lbs of trash during their trashathon along Beach Road on Saipan Saturday afternoon.
About 50 members of the association, mostly youths, converged at Mt. Carmel Church in Chalan Kanoa at 1pm. After praying for a few minutes, the group began scouring Beach Road for garbage items.
Many minors, including 3-year-old Nefyan Maria Sony Sablan, joined their parents and relatives in the group’s beautification event.
At 3pm, the group now hauling two truckloads of trash, reached Kristo Rai Church in Garapan. After posing for a group photo, the members ended up their trashathon with prayers at Kristo Rai Church.
Gideon S. Kikku, one of the advisors of the association, told the Saipan Tribune that they coordinated with the Mayor’s Office and the Division of Environmental Quality in conducting the trashathon as part of the island’s beautification project.
“We want to contribute to the community, that’s one of our objectives,” Kikku said, adding that their group would conduct trashathon once a month.
Kikku said most of the trash they had found were plastic water bottles, beer cans, plastic bags, leaves, and picnic tables.
Two weeks ago, the association also collected about 300 lbs of trash at Pakpak Beach near the Pacific Islands Club in San Antonio.
Kikku said they are adopting Pakpak Beach to maintain its cleanliness.
Neftis S. Sablan, one of the advisors, said the trashathon was just part of the Chuukese community’s show of appreciation to the CNMI for keeping them on the island.
“We want to help the community by keeping Saipan clean and look beautiful,” Sablan said.
