Champions give tricks of the trade at PIC
Triathletes and fans of the sport had a special moment on Thursday night at the Pacific Islands Club as a pair of three-time winners of the XTERRA Saipan Championship were on hand in the Napu room to answer questions and give advice from years of experience on the multi-sport scene.
Two-time Olympian Olivier Marceau and 2004 XTERRA World Champion Jamie Whitmore spent two hours spreading their knowledge to some of the endurance aficionados from Saipan, Japan, Switzerland, Mexico, the Netherlands, and the United States.
The pros offered stories from their races on Saipan as well as throughout their career to help explain some of the techniques that propelled them to the top of the off-road scene. While many were expecting to hear about the countless hours spent on the trails riding and running, they learned that time spent in recovery was just as important to reaching the next level of fitness and race readiness.
The local community has offered several activities for those who opted to remain in Saipan for the 17th Tagaman Triathlon during the 2nd Annual Saipan Sportsfest, but the big name athletes have seen fit to give back by hosting clinics aimed at sharing their vast knowledge and experience in the field of triathlon as they have for the past couple of years.
While some asked general questions about triathlon and the professional approach to races and training, others fired away with specific inquiries aimed at furthering their quest for personal bests.
By the time that Whitmore and Marceau called it quits, the crowd had exhausted its supply of questions and left the San Antonio hotspot with their thirst for knowledge fully quenched.
