Sprinter Tyrone Omar, swimmer Carolyn Pierce, and mountain biker Federico Fernandez were recognized as the top athletes for March by the Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association during its monthly meeting Thursday evening at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Omar was voted as Male Athlete of the Month courtesy of his performance in the 11th IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championships in Moscow, Russia last month, where he added another big accomplishment to an already long list.

The 18-year-old Puerto Rico resident competed in the fourth of seven heats for the 60m sprint, placing seventh in his heat with a time of 7.17 seconds. Omar, who anticipated a strong start in the race because of his quickness off the blocks, had a reaction time of 0.157 second.

With his finish, the Marianas High School student was able to beat out six other runners in the event, which featured world class athletes from the United States, Japan, Russia, France, Germany, Sweden, Japan, Italy, Finland, Poland, and Hungary, to name a few. His performance also set a new CNMI National record in the event.

For her part, Pierce made Saipan proud as she competed in the recent Saipan International Swim Meet at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool and the Saipan Ocean Swim behind World Resort Saipan.

Pierce was phenomenal during her races as she put up strong performances in the 200m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, and 100m backstroke in the swim meet.

She then placed first in the 2.5K ocean swim in the women’s 40-49 age group with a time of 42:54, and took center stage as she placed second in the female high point competition.

For his part, Fernandez earned his Male Student Athlete of the Month Award after punching in a strong performance in the Ely Wong ORAXTERRE last March 25.

The event, hosted by the Northern Mariana Islands Triathlon Federation, featured tasks for individuals challenging a triathlon as well as individuals challenging a mountain bike course.

The youngster showcased his skills as he muscled and maneuvered his way through the 30K course to finish in a sterling 59:08.
