Four teams interested in women’s cage league
Four teams have already expressed interest in competing in the BANMI Women’s Basketball League, which is set to open on April 22 at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
This according to BANMI vice president Elias Rangamar, who disclosed yesterday that aside from the team he’ll be coaching, others teams interested include a squad from San Antonio, the Saipan Southern High School Lady Rays, and the Garapan Rollers.
What makes the opportunity even better is that unlike other leagues, no entry fee will be required for all teams as Rangamar cited that the main purpose of hosting the league is to promote women’s basketball in the Commonwealth.
Rangamar said the start of the women’s league will coincide with the kick off of the 4th Budweiser Cup BANMI Men’s Island-wide Basketball League, which is expected to conclude on early June.
Earlier, Bud Cup coordinator Abner Venus said the league will kick off as soon as the ongoing 2006 Inter-Government Basketball League concludes.
Two teams that have confirmed competing in the league are the CNMI Men’s National Basketball Team, coached by Rufino Aguon and Ol’Aces I, which has won each Bud Cup since its inaugural season.
The national men’s team’s participation in the Bud Cup is expected to help them prepare for its upcoming battle against regional basketball powerhouse Guam, Palau, and Marshall Islands.
Entrance fee for the league is $800, plus $100 required for membership in BANMI.
