A top executive of the Seoul-based company that owns the Saipan World Resort was appointed yesterday to serve as the governor’s special adviser for the Korean tourism market.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial named World Construction Co. Ltd. business adviser Dong Sung Lee to be his special adviser on Korean tourism.

Lee has accepted the appointment. The position entails no government compensation.

In a letter to Lee, the governor expressed his desire to develop the Korea tourism market amid the current decline of the Japan market.

“In reviewing the performance of our tourism market, I feel that much more could be done to take better advantage of the opportunities presented to us in bringing more tourists and economic advantages to the Commonwealth. Particularly now when Japan air service has declined, we need to work even harder to create an awareness of our islands in other key markets such as Korea,” Fitial said.

He noted that Lee could contribute to achieving this goal, given his extensive experience, business relationships, and working knowledge of the Korean market.

The governor said he wanted Lee to advise him on strategies and activities that can be done to grow the Korea market and improve the CNMI’s economy.

“As my special adviser, I will call on you from time to time to provide me with intelligence, advice and opinions on various matters. I also welcome you to contact me at any time if you should have suggestions regarding how to improve and grow the economy of the CNMI,” Fitial said.

Lee was educated in England and serves as business adviser to World Construction Co. Ltd., which owns Saipan World Resort.
