73 experience XTERRA Scramble

While triathletes were making their final preparations for the 5th XTERRA Saipan Championships, others were able to experience a third of the XTERRA fever that hit the island.

A total of 73 runners challenged and conquered the two XTERRA Scramble Sunset Trail Run courses, with 13 tackling the 10K run and 60 testing the 5K run at the American Memorial Park last Friday afternoon.

Kengo Kuroda was the top overall finisher in the 10K race as he finished in 27:28, recording a pace of 4:25 per mile. Takamasa Hashimoto took second place in 30:15, while Saipan’s Chang Wang Jang was third overall with a time of 32:36 after running on a 5:15 per mile pace.

Tamio Nishikiko and Terence Koritz followed in 32:40 and 33:02.

For her part, Mamiko Katayama was the first female finisher as she crossed the finish line in 33:32, while marathoner Monica Yamaguchi was second overall in 36:41. The third female and 11th overall was Allison Livington, who clocked in at 46:19.

Rounding up the Top 10 finishers were Daniel Calvo (37:15), Sathiyapalan Kalarikkal (38:58), and Makoto Katayama (42:32). Julie Newman (46:20) and Joseph Livingston (46:20) also competed and finished the race.

For his part, Mitsuyoshi Fujishita topped the 5K run, finishing in a time of 16:05. The race started minutes after the 10K start. Fujishita took off with the 10K runners and completed the race.

Second place overall went to longtime road runner Yoshi Suzuki, who finished in 16:06, while multi-sport athlete Allen Moses placed third overall and first in the 10-19 division with a time of 16:11.

Right behind Moses was Marianas High School student Nate Mateo, who posted a time of 16:17, while Steve Pixley and Kenji Kawai followed in 16:44 and 16:50.

Rounding up the Top 10 are Kimitaka Nakamura (16:14), Kelvin Navarrete (17:17), Yu Kobayahi (17:21), and Hiroko Miura (17:43).

The first female finisher was Ayano Kawai, whose time of 18:14 was also good enough for 11th overall. Dede Hill followed in 18:21, while Eliva Navarrete was the third female in 18:50, just a second ahead of Koblerville Elementary School student Reylynn Sapong (18:51).
