Sparks earn first win in IVYBL
The Matansa Sparks finally got over the hill as the tem scored its first victory in the ongoing 2006 Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League Monday evening.
With Dave Jones and Dominic Reyes having a scoring spree, the Sparks were able to stop the San Antonio Sixers II, 50-29.
Reyes had a fiesta at the start of the bout as he worked his way for eight points, leading the Sparks to a 12-8 advantage after the first period.
Jones then picked up where Reyes left off and pumped in six points, however, the Sparks received stronger resistance as San Antonio was able to prevent the team from pulling away. At the break, the Sixers II trailed by seven points, 13-20.
Determined to bag their first win, the Sparks continued to put up strong numbers at the start of the second half as Reyes came back to life for six points, highlighting a 12-8 run that resulted in the Sparks taking a 32-21 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Sparks cagers smelled victory and were confident that their game kicked into another level. Jones broke loose for eight points and Mart Sablan had four points as the Sparks closed strong with an 18-point effort.
Jones and Reyes finished with 18 and 16 points to lead the Sparks, while Darren Gabrido drilled in eight points to lead San Antonio.

Sixers II 29 – Gabrido 8, Ni. Salem 7, Namelo 2, Ne. Salem 2, Iglecias 2, Cadiang 2, Ferrer 2.
