Off the Beaten Path, a local non-profit organization, said yesterday that The Vagina Monologues production to benefit Karidat’s Guma Esperansa will take place at the American Memorial Park Auditorium this Friday, March 24, and Saturday, March 25.

“We have sold out of tickets for both shows, thank you very much for your support,” said Fran Castro during a news briefing held at Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan in Garapan.

Thousands of VDay 2006 benefit productions of The Vagina Monologues are expected this year in theaters, houses of worship, and college campuses around the world. In a world where one in three women will experience violence during her lifetime, the VDay movement has raised over $35 million to end violence toward women and girls over the past eight years.

Here in the CNMI, there were 436 cases of domestic violence, 37 cases of sexual abuse, and six rapes last year. These are only the reported figures, there are more women who have not spoken up about the crimes they have endured. This week, VDay Marianas will simultaneously raise funds and public awareness through the benefit production, The Vagina Monologues.

“At the shows, we will display artwork donated by local artists and take bids for a silent auction to raise additional funds. We will also be selling VDay apparel, all with the aim of raising at least $5,000 to donate to our beneficiaries: 90 percent to Karidat’s Guma’ Esperansa and 10 percent to the Justice for Comfort Women national effort,” said Castro.

The sponsors are Pacific Health Inc. (PHI), Aon Insurance, Public Health Sexual Offense Awareness Program, Pacific Trading Co., Carmen Safeway Enterprises, Salon de Manila, Joseph A. Arriola, Marianas Medical Center, Saipan Shipping, Sablan TopLine Cleaning Agency, Ruth Tighe, Younis Art Studio Inc., Elite Printing, Torres Brothers Attorneys-at-Law, Marian Methner and Greg Elliott.
