Kings crown Masters, 13-3
The Bud Kings continued to muscle out the competition over the weekend as they laid waste to their elders with a 13-3 beat down of the Masters on Saturday in continuation of the Saipan Major League at Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.
Tony Celis was unstoppable at the plate as the designated hitter went 4-for-4 with three singles, a double, and a half-dozen runs batted in for the Kings, while all-around talent A. J. Allen went 3-for-3 with a string of singles and showed his base running skills with four plate crossings.
The Kings got plenty of offense from their infielders as first baseman B. J. Seman went 2-for-4 with a pair of base knocks and an RBI, and shortstopper Jerome Delos Santos made the most of his lone hit with a two-run double.
Centerfielder Jon Villagomez added a pair of singles to the mix, but the Kings also got plenty of participation on the mound as Byron Kaipat fronted a four-man band that combined for a three hitter.
Kaipat allowed a run off of one hit and fanned seven through four innings before Mike Taitano took the hill for a pair of stanzas for shutout baseball. The middle reliever gave up one hit before turning over the reigns to would-be closer Bobby Castro, but he was only able to last for a third of an inning.
After giving up a pair of runs, Castro got the relief in the form of rookie hurler James Kintol, who closed out the final two-thirds inning to seal the deal.
There was little doubt that the Kings would continue to romp to their third straight win early on as they ripped off five runs in the bottom of the first inning. They posted another tally in the bottom of the second before piling on another nickel in the third to take a commanding 11-0 lead. The umpires finally had enough when the Kings held the Masters to two runs in the top of the seventh for a 13-3 score, as the boys in blue invoked the 10-run mercy rule to send everyone home in time for an early Saturday night on Saipan.
