Three persons played heroes when they rescued two boys from drowning at the beach near Hyatt Regency Saipan in Garapan Saturday morning.

The victims, about eight and six years old, are sons of a Chinese businessman who operates a store in Garapan. The two were brought to the Commonwealth Health Center and placed under observation.

The rescuers are Ono Harumitsu, manager of Windsurfing Saipan Inc., the company’s instructor Ronald Chisato, and an unidentified Filipino man.

Witnesses told Saipan Tribune that the victims along with their other minor brother were earlier seen climbing a boat at the hotel’s beach swimming ground.

The three children then proceeded to the sandbar area, where it was deeper on the side portion. It was high tide at that time.

The third boy, who was near the shoreline, noticed that his brothers were drowning when they landed in the deep portion. He then shouted, “My brothers! My brothers! Help! Help!”

Shigeru Tomita, owner of Windsurfing Saipan, said he was in their shop when he heard the boy shouting for help.

Tomita used binoculars and saw one of the two bodies in the water. He instructed Harumitsu and Chisato to run for the rescue as he then called for an ambulance.

Harumitsu and Chisato swam to the water and picked up the two boys, who were three feet away from each other. The two boys, already unconscious, were about five feet away from the sandbar when the rescuers grabbed them.

While they were still in the water, Harumitsu immediately applied CPR on the youngest boy. Chisato on the other hand, brought the oldest boy to the shore where he placed him sideways.

Waters started coming out from the boy’s mouth. A Filipino man applied CPR on the boy.

The two victims started breathing. Medics then arrived and transported them to CHC.

The mother was in the area. It was not clear whether the father was also in the beach at that time.
