Impressive performances throughout the week
Much happened over the past week as the local sports scene was filled with excitement and thrilling performances.
Finding success while competing off island were Meiko Motoyoshi and Kevin Carey of the Pacific Islands Club as the two represented Saipan well in the Guam Isla Triathlon, which featured 48 competitors. Motoyoshi was the first female to finish while Carey was fourth in his division.
Also returning to home soil was 18-yeqar-old Tyrone Omar, who competed at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Moscow, where he set a national record in the 60m sprint with a time of 7.17 seconds.
Meanwhile, champions were crowned in the Private School Basketball League as the Grace Christian Academy Eagles took home the boys title with a 59-52 victory over the Mt. Carmel School Knights in a battle that started two Fridays ago and ended last Monday. Winning the girls crown were the Saipan International School Geckos, who defeated the Mt. Carmel cagebelles.
Also having success on the hardcourt was Cabalen-RP Construction/Transamerica, which kept their season alive by beating Samahang Ilokano at Pangasinense-Flor A. Miranda, 99-85, in Game 2 of their best-of-three finals in the Budweiser-Coca Cola 6th UFO Inter-Organizational Basketball League last Sunday.
Also posting solid performance on the harcourt were Saipan Southern High School Lady Rays, who picked their first win of the season by upsetting Kagman High School, 50-46, in the playoffs of the 2006 MISA High School Basketball League to advance to the finals. Defending champion Mt. Carmel School Knights also return to the finals with a 99-82 win over KHS.
Meanwhile, Peter Tenorio worked his magic on the mound over the weekend and pitched a no hitter to lead McDonald’s to victory over Toyota Matrix as action in the Saipan Little League continued.
Defending champion Mwaliyas also made a return to the finals of the World Organized Rocball High School League by taking Game 3 of their semifinals series against Black Magic.
Raul Dumapit and Ron Cal claimed the March Pepsi King and Queen of the Lanes titles, while Tony Cruz won the Prince of the Lanes.
Action in the ongoing Inter-Government Basketball League, island-wide Village Youth Basketball League, and Saipan Major League also continued.
